How to stand out from the daily clutter on Twitter

By Julia Wallace | May 31, 2022

500 million tweets go out every day, on average. 500 million.

So, yes, tweeting is in fact equivalent to shouting into the void — unless you know how to capture an audience!

Here are some simple tips that we’ve found can help businesses stand out on Twitter, driving their reach and audience growth.

1. Humor is King

On Twitter, one of the best ways to catch people’s attention is to make them laugh. Need an example? Wendy’s is consistently putting in the work to remain Twitter’s corporate class clown, and they are well regarded for it.

They make memes, lightly roast their competitors, and respond creatively to the people who @ them. Even if they are not strictly talking about their brand, they’re still generating hype for themselves when their tweet gains traction, because their name is attached to it.

May Wendy’s be a lesson to us all!

2. Utilize social listening

Social listening is when companies monitor topics that are relevant to their business and keep tabs on what people are saying about them. Then, the company can jump in and respond (again, best comedically!) as a way to get their name out there.

For example: If you sell a service that organizes people’s inbox for them, you can find relevant tweets searching “inbox” + “mess,” “inbox” + “insane,” “email” + “stressful,” etc., etc.

Respond only to the tweets that feel appropriate, and make sure to read the tweet and reply accordingly. No canned responses. NO SALES!

This may feel like a lot of work, but once you get in the swing of things, this is a great way to get your company’s name out on Twitter!

3. Hashtags Matter

People use hashtags often on Twitter, so they’re a great way to get eyeballs onto your tweet.

Just make sure you do your research. Hashtags such as #goals are being used multiple times a minute. Search for hashtags that are used multiple times a day instead, so that your reach lasts longer.

And just as importantly, make sure your hashtags are relevant! When people are searching for the services you offer, you want to make sure you show up at the top of their search results.
