Unlock Brand Consistency: How to Use Adobe Fonts in Canva
By Claire Sprague | August 13, 2024
Let's face it, most of us in the social media world are living a double life: we juggle Adobe Creative Cloud like pros, but we secretly have a love affair with Canva's user-friendly magic.
Sure, some design purists swear by Photoshop and Illustrator like they're holy relics (and hey, I used to be one of them!), but for agencies like AMR creating hundreds of graphics each month, Canva's efficiency is a no-brainer. Not to mention it helps content creators who are super strong writers create stunning graphics that they couldn’t have done on their own.
But in this space between the two worlds lies fonts and our need to make a brand look and feel cohesive — no matter where the content is created.
Fonts are a big deal in the design world (shocker, right?). Some are fancy, some are basic, but they all have one job: to make your brand look hot AF no matter where it shows up. They're the glue that holds your brand's vibe together, no matter where it pops up. Adobe gets this, and they've got a whole library of fonts built right in. You don’t always need to shell out cash like you're buying shoes at Myfonts.com (although, those are cute too).
But for me, the problem was always “How do I get Adobe fonts into Canva to use??”
Until recently, I thought there was no way to download Adobe fonts and get them in Canva, but I’m so excited to share this hack that I stumbled upon!
This is a little tricky, but it’s totally doable. If you have a Mac, here are the steps to follow:
1. In your Adobe document (Illustrator, etc), make sure you get the full name of the font you want to use.
2. Go back to your desktop, click on the “Go” menu, and go down to Library
(If you don’t see Library as an option, hold down the Option key and it should appear).
3. Then you have to dig to get to the right folder. Here’s the path:
Application Support
Adobe
Core Sync
Plugins
Livetype
4. At this point, you may have arrived at what LOOKS like an empty folder. Use this shortcut:
Shift + command + . (you have to use all 3 buttons: shift + command + and the period button)
And magically you should see a bunch of non-descript folders appear, and they may be grayed out.
5. Click on the .r folder
6. There you will find lots of numbered files.
Click on one and in the preview panel you can see an image of each font. You can also click on “Info” to find the font name if you don’t remember exactly which one it is.
7. Once you’ve found the right one, right-click and select “Copy”. Then go to your desktop and select “Paste”.
8. Rename the file with the appropriate font name.
9. Now head to Canva to your Brand Kit and select “Upload Font File”.
And there you go! Your Adobe fonts are now ready to use in Canva! Now you've unlocked the secret to brand consistency! Using Adobe Fonts in Canva lets you maintain a cohesive look for your brand across all your designs.
As a reminder, some fonts are copyrighted and need special permission or fees to be able to use. Make sure you are following the rules for using fonts for your brand!
