Cat got your tongue? Well, we’ve got your back! Here are 50 ideas to get your writing wheels turning when all you have is a blinking cursor. 

Depending on your brand voice and the tone you’ve struck in your business thus far, you won’t want to veer too far off from that. For instance, if your content has been strictly educational and brand-focused, you won’t want to pull a 180 and start telling completely unrelated personal stories. This would quickly alienate and confuse your audience.

On the other hand, don’t be afraid to try something a little new! As you go through this list, pay attention to which of these ideas stand out and get you excited to start writing. Those should be the first you try!

 
 

Business Oriented

  • Talk about a time your business tried something new and you were surprised by how well it went.

  • In what ways would you like to see your business grow this year?

  • Reminisce about some of the fantasies you harbored when you were dreaming up your business. How has real life changed those ideals?

  • Do you have a favorite customer success story? Tell it!

  • Highlight your best-selling product. Write an ode to this product. What makes it so beloved and special?

 
 

Sneak peek behind the scenes

  • Hour-by-hour, run through what a typical day on the job looks like for you. You could also do this as a series, spotlighting each of your employees!

  • What’s the aspect of your business that your customers would be most surprised to discover is being completed out of their view?

  • Tell your audience about a trick you’ve discovered that helps your business run more efficiently.

  • Talk about the most annoying, unappealing, gross, or time-consuming task that you dread completing, but do regularly because you have to!

  • Do you listen to music while you work? What kind, and what about it do you connect with?

 
 

Educational

  • Teach your audience how they can make or reproduce your most popular product at home. (Don’t worry, this won’t drive away business, because people pay for convenience. This will only drive customer loyalty!)

  • What is the biggest mistake you made in your business? How did you ameliorate it?

  • Name five facts behind one of your products.

  • Highlight some of your favorite software that helps your business run smoothly.

  • What was the hardest hurdle you had to overcome in the life of your business? Talk about how you did it.

 
 

Humor

  • Post some of the things you overhear customers say (keep it anonymous unless you have their permission!) that make you laugh.

  • Explain an inside joke you have with your employees.

  • Do you work with pranksters? Are you the prankster? Tell your followers about some of the best and worst pranks that have been pulled at your business.

  • Write a poem about one of your products. Make it silly and hyperbolic!

  • Have ever you tried something new for your business that went really badly? There’s got to be a funny story there. Tell it!

 
 

Wordplay

  • Create a portmanteau of two of your products, features, offerings, or business principles that could stand to be combined.

  • Swap out one of the words in your favorite figure of speech.

  • Use the name of one of your products and fit it into a pun.

  • Create an acrostic for the name of your business, using facets of your business for each letter.

  • Use the lyrics of a famous song but swap all of the nouns and adjectives for things that pertain to your business.

 
 

Personal Stories

  • Talk about what you do to cure a bad day on the job.

  • Tell your audience a bit about your background and the journey you embarked on when starting your business.

  • Describe what it felt like living through the first year of your business.

  • What is your favorite part of your job?

  • What do your days off look like? Do you have days off?

 
 

Challenges

  • Talk about a moment of weakness you experienced recently as a business owner.

  • What is the facet of your business that just never works out as it should?

  • What is the hardest part about your job?

  • Talk about a failed product that your audience never got to see.

  • Walk us through what happened on a particularly stressful day.

 
 

Current Events

  • How is your industry affected by the economic and/or political conditions of the moment?

  • What’s a trend you’re seeing in your industry that you’re excited by?

  • Share a quote you love that addresses the times.

  • How has your business changed due to current events — local, national, or global?

  • Are you taking strides to be more ecologically sustainable? What are they?

 
 

Community

  • Shout out five of your favorite local businesses in your community and tell your audience why they’re so special.

  • Shout out a few of your competitors and talk about what they’re doing well.

  • Request that your customers tag your business on their social media posts so that you can repost their photos later! (If you keep it up, this will make your profile seem like a community in and of itself.)

  • Talk about the businesses that served as an inspiration to you as you built yours.

  • Do you have a mentor or teacher who you turn to when things get hard? Talk about the value they have brought to your business.

  • Write a caption based on this emoji: 🧩

  • Write a caption in as few characters as you can that uses every letter of the alphabet.

  • Write about your favorite object in your office.

  • Admit an embarrassing fact about yourself.

  • Talk about your favorite book, TV show, podcast, or movie of the moment.
