Everything you Need to Know About Instagram’s Algorithm

The dreaded Instagram algorithm. It carries immense power in determining what posts users are most likely to see on Instagram. And in turn, how many views something is likely to get. But if it is so important, why do we know so little about its inner workings? And, are users able to outsmart the algorithm in order to use it to their advantage?

Can you Beat Instagram's Algorithm? Sorry, but No.

Everyone wants to get the most bang for their buck when it comes to posting on Instagram. A common misconception of how to achieve this is to try to beat the platform's algorithm - i.e.: deliberating making content you believe the algorithm will deem relevant and put in front of the most viewers. However, generating content with the sole purpose of trying to outsmart the algorithm is a set up for disaster. As, ultimately, it is impossible to beat the algorithm. Algorithms across all social media platforms are extremely complex and remain largely unknown to the public. But what we do know is that social media platforms are driven by human performance, such as views, likes, and comments. In terms of Instagram, since 2016, its new algorithm determines the order of posts users see on their newsfeed. The system does this by analyzing when a post was posted and users' past engagement with similar posts, content, and users. However, the internal workings and logistics of exactly how Instagram makes these decisions remain confidential. Various factors also increase the complexity of this process. For example, the algorithm itself is likely imperfect and bound to have errors and inconsistencies. It is also continuously changing as it continues to learn and evolve to users' behavior. As a result, trying to predict the algorithm is a tireless and endless task.

What to do Instead

Rather than trying to beat Instagram's algorithm, businesses should focus on creating high quality 'evergreen' content that performs well and speaks to their target audience. After all, the goal of social media is to connect with real people, not computers! This means engaging with users, building high quality and long-lasting relationships, and putting out consistent content that fits their niche. Therefore, the best way to ‘beat’ Instagram's Algorithm may be to stop trying to compete with it all together!
